AI Updates

News:

  • China is falling way behind the US in AI development cause of its dependence on US tech for building its models.

  • India said it won’t require companies to seek approval before rolling out AI models anymore.

  • Rather than build their own AI, Apple might just put Google Gemini in your iPhone instead.

  • xAI’s Grok is now open source on GitHub.

  • Bloomberg trained its model, then found out that just using out-of-the-box GPT-4 was better.

  • Nvidia Conference

    • Nvidia announced a new chip that’s 30x more powerful than its most recent one. AI models like ChatGPT-4, Gemini, and Claude are just the beginning. Bigger chips will make it easier/possible to make even bigger models.

    • Nvidia also announced Project GR00T, an effort to build the AI brains behind humanoid robots. Y’know, like the ones from Figure and Tesla.

    • Terms discussed, and you will hear a lot moving forward

  • Sam Altman Interview

    • On rumors of artificial general intelligence: “None of us have seen AGI. We’ve not built AGI.” *AGI Artificial general intelligence is a type of artificial intelligence that can perform as well or better than humans on a wide range of cognitive tasks, as opposed to narrow AI, which is designed for specific tasks. It is one of the various definitions of strong AI

    • On the lawsuit from Elon Musk: “I think this whole thing is unbecoming of a builder…it makes me extra sad he’s doing [this] to us.”

    • On copyright and AI: “Do people who create valuable data deserve to have some way that they get compensated for using it? I think the answer is yes. I don’t know yet what the answer is.”

    • On job loss due to AI: “The way I think about it is not what percent of jobs AI will do, but what percent of tasks will AI do …maybe people are way more efficient at the job they do.”

    • On GPT-5: “I expect that the delta between [GPT-5] and [GPT-4] will be the same as between [GPT-4] and [GPT-3]…We will release an amazing new model this year. I don’t know what we’ll call it.”

  • OpenAI is expected to launch GPT-5 over the summer. Early previews show it is “materially better” than GPT-4.

  • Bye PI

  • Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind and Inflection Co-founder, joins Microsoft to lead Copilot

  • Nearly all of Pi’s parent company, Inflection AI, decided to jump ship just ten months after Pi’s launch. That includes the CEO, Chief Scientist and nearly all 70 employees. All are joining Microsoft to work on Microsoft Copilot and other AI products.

  • Scammers are using AI to steal people’s tax refunds.

  • Tax season fraud is set to spike in 2024 as AI enables cybercriminals to generate lifelike images and make convincing videos that impersonate taxpayers to steal their refunds.

  • Victims of tax-related identity theft wait an average of 19 months for the IRS to correct and send their refunds. How it works: Scammers gather information about you — like pictures, addresses, employment status, and other personal data — publicly posted, available in legal or illegal databases, or stolen through email phishing. Then, they file a fake tax return before you file your real one. AI lets these fraudsters make fakes faster and enables them to use more sophisticated techniques to defeat IRS and accounting firm security measures.

  • AI-generated conspiracy theory videos are flooding TikTok.
